Doyle Brunson is one of the true legends of the game of poker. He was one of the players invited to play in the first World Series of Poker and would play in it for many years eventually winning twice. As a result of his tournament play Brunson became one of the first big stars in the game of poker. Even to this day Doyle Brunson has remained one of the most famous poker players in world, largely because he has continued to win tournaments.
Doyle Brunson was born in a small town in Texas during the height of the depression. As a high school student Brunson was a top athlete in both basketball and track and field. He briefly looked forward to the possibility of a career in the NBA but a knee injury while he was in college put an end to that. It was while at college that Brunson would get serious about poker. He would stick around and graduate and even get a master's degree before taking a job selling office furniture. However when he got his first pay check he realized that he was making more money playing poker.
It was at this point that Doyle Brunson decided to become a professional poker player. At the time this was a big risk since poker was of course illegal in Texas at the time. Because of that the games were played underground and they tended to attract a shady crowd. The result was that violence and cheating were common on the poker circuit. Nevertheless Brunson thrived and made a great deal of money playing poker. However he also realized that if he was going to make a career out of poker he would have to move to Las Vegas.
When he got to Las Vegas Doyle Brunson became a very successful player in cash games around town. In 1970 Benny Binion would create the World Series of Poker and invite the best players in the world to compete, Doyle Brunson was one of those players. Brunson would go on to win back to back World Series of Poker tittles in the mid seventies and establish himself as one of the best poker players in the world. He would also go on to win a number of other tournaments which would make him quite famous as a player.
As one of the first real stars of the game of poker Doyle Brunson decided to write a book to teach others how to play. Over the years many of the best players have learned to play from that book. As a result it is now considered to be the bible of poker. Doyle Brunson has continued his poker career and apparently has no plans to retire. He continues to enter tournaments and win. And with the new found popularity of poker he has been introduced to a whole new generation of poker fans.
