If you are serious about playing poker it is a good idea to have goals, things that you want to accomplish from your poker playing. I have several goals both short term and long term but my ultimate poker goal is to play in the World Series of Poker Main Event. This may not seem like the most realistic goal to a lot of people but I believe that I can do it and I am certainly going to try.
The obvious reason that my poker goal is to play in the main event at the World Series of Poker is that it is by far the most prestigious poker tournament in the world. Every year thousands of players enter the tournament including all of the world's best players and they get whittled down until there is just the final table. This is the main event and it is usually a group of the best players in the world. Playing in the main event would definitely establish a reputation as a top poker player.
The other obvious reason that I would want to play in the main event at the World Series of Poker is for the money. It is far and away the most lucrative poker tournament in the world. The winner will take home a prize of several million dollars and all of the players who make the final table will walk away with a large sum of money. Obviously playing poker isn't all about the money but it is an important factor so it would definitely be nice to be in a position to win.
The World Series of Poker has a long history and was really the first poker tournament to come along. In fact it is largely responsible for the huge popularity of poker these days. The tournament started in 1970 as a way to attract visitors to Binion's Casino. The first several tournaments brought together the best players in the world to play each other. Since then the tournament has grown into a huge event attracting thousands of players as well as many spectators not to mention television viewers. Making the main event would certainly attract a lot of attention.
A lot of people have tried to tell me that my goal of making the final table at the World Series of Poker is unrealistic, after all I am not a famous player. I would simply point out that unknown players make it to main event all the time, some even win it. That is the great thing about the World Series of Poker, anybody can enter it and anybody who enters has a shot at winning. Obviously the top players in the world have the best shot, they are the best players in the world after all, but the chance still exists for anybody to win.
